citizens benefit from their welfare and social rights when dealing with lower local authorities according to the principle of subsidiarity.

13. Calls for stronger democratic accountability in the governance of the Schengen Area, including an enhanced role for the European Parliament in overseeing the reintroduction and prolongation of internal border controls.

Reason

Decisions on reintroducing internal border controls are currently dominated by national executives with limited oversight, weakening transparency and trust. Strengthening the role of the European Parliament would enhance democratic scrutiny and ensure that restrictions to free movement are properly justified and monitored.
